Writing a great resume can seem tricky at first, which is why it’s a good idea to get insight from the experts. We reviewed this Healthcare Management Student resume sample to highlight a few of the more common mistakes made by real-world applicants.
Create a focused summary without using pronouns
Your summary should include a quick snapshot of your relevant experience, job skills, and key personality traits. While this applicant’s use of first-person perspective is correct, leave out pronouns for a more professional appearance. INCORRECT: I am currently working toward my career in Healthcare Management, while also spending the majority of my free time working with a variety of animals on my parents family farm. I grew up working with and feeding animals as a daily routine. CORRECT: Compassionate individual with experience providing high-quality care both for people and animals. Continuing education in healthcare field with working knowledge of radiology, inoculations, and team leadership. Accumulated a variety of skills by participating in several different care-oriented industries, developing a talent for providing personal, focused assistance in order to better to lives of others. The corrected version introduces more specific ideas, referencing more experiences from the professional world rather than speaking of pursuits at home.
Make sure to correctly identify skills versus accomplishments, keep both relevant
It’s important that a resume not appear too thin, but steer clear of off-topic information. This applicant’s Highlights and Accomplishments sections contain numerous references to interests which are not related to the industry that she is seeking work in. This kind of information does not usually aid you in your job search. CORRECTED EXAMPLE: Skills
Information detailing seminars and internships has been omitted, as these facts can be included in one’s education section. It’s also recommended that you only include a separate section for your achievements if three relevant bullet points exist. Otherwise, include this information with your work experience later in the resume.
Include an informative, professional experience section
Whether you have a great amount of relevant experience in your chosen field or not, it’s critical that this section be properly developed. Stick to a similar writing style as in your summary, and make sure to include specific details about accomplishments, impact you made for the company, and so forth.
