Even with the same set of skills and experiences, certain people get hired at a higher rate than others. This is because their resume, which is the first impression that hiring managers get from them, is free of common mistakes. Refer to this Health & Exercise Science Student resume sample so that you can improve your own resume and increase your chances of getting hired.
Keep your resume concise
In most cases, a resume should not be more than 1 page long. Especially if you have been working for less than 20 years, keeping your resume concise is strongly recommended. If you find it difficult to cut content on your resume, prioritize what skill set is most important for a particular position and tailor your resume to that role. In this example, the Skill Highlights and College Courses sections can be significantly shortened.
Utilize bullet points to highlight your responsibilities at a position
Instead of writing a paragraph-long essay to describe your role at a position, use 5-8 concise bullet points that start with action verbs. WRONG: “The mission of Wake Forest University Student Advisers is to foster a strong relationship between peer mentor and incoming student through programs and activities during New Student Orientation and throughout the school year. Additionally, Student Advisers will work closely with faculty/staff advisers and the Office of Academic Advising to develop academic plans that follow the values, goals, and career aspirations of the incoming student. Finally, the Student Advisers will introduce incoming students to the student body and campus life while serving as a mentor to aid with this transition. RIGHT:
Do not copy paste
The paragraphs in the Experience section give the impression of being copy pasted or being quoted from someone else, because they are within quotation marks. Do not write down the job description of your role. Instead, highlight what YOU did at that position. Also avoid including website links as part of your experience.
Beware of misspellings
Double, triple check your resume. This might be your only chance to give any kind of impression to a hiring manager. Do not make it a bad one. Also avoid being redundant and keep your resume short to decrease the chances of making a spelling error. WRONG: Volunteen (High School Volunteer) at Wake Forest Baptist Health RIGHT: High School Volunteer at Wake Forest Baptist Health
Make dates of employment more legible
Instead of putting your dates of employment into the bullet point list, include them in the same line as your title to make it easier to follow your growth path. In addition, if you have been employed for several consecutive years, use a hyphen. Also, you do not need to do the math for the hiring manager; 2009-2013 is 5 years and there is no need to restate that. Lastly, whenever possible, list the month in which your employment started and ended as well. WRONG: Sunday School Teacher at First Presbyterian Church, Winston-Salem 5 years – 2 hours a month, year round 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 Teach up to 20 students a lesson plan centered around a Bible story with a craft and various activities RIGHT: Sunday School Teacher at First Presbyterian Church, Winston-Salem 2009-2013
