Applying for a new position can be an exciting and intimidating task. One of the most important aspects of the job application is your resume, which can showcase all of your unique talents and qualifications. In order to help you out with this process, we’ve studied a sample resume and have pointed out areas that need improvement. By studying these examples, you should be able to prevent making the same errors in your own resume. Use this guide to help construct the resume that will move you ahead in the hiring process.
Let the summary showcase your characteristics
A well-constructed resume uses the summary section to provide an overview of characteristics that make for a dedicated worker and unique individual. The applicant has stated her job intent, which is actually redundant because turning in your application to a company already implies that you wish to work for them. The grammar in the summary paragraph is sloppy and incorrect, which might communicate to the employer that the candidate is not serious about the position. You should also avoid using first person in resumes. Note the difference in showcases: WRONG: Summary I am looking to find a salon where i can use my creative skills in hair styling, further my career and education in an amazing salon. RIGHT: Summary Creative hair stylist with an aptitude for learning and desire to expand professional experience. Ideally, summaries are actually closer to five sentences, but you can see how rewriting even one sentence can bring about drastic change in the applicant’s tone.
Always use bullet points for listing
The applicant uses bullet points under the highlights section, but fails to do so consistently. Bullets are important because they maximize the readability of your resume. Often times employers do not have the time to read over every resume carefully, and thus it is important that information is presented in a clear and organized manner. Note the difference in the following formats: WRONG: Accomplishments Toni and Guy Student of the month, Toni & Guy Rockstar award, Worcester magazine hair styling, Boston fashion show runway hair and bridal hair and makeup. RIGHT Accomplishments
It also is important to explain what these accomplishments and awards signify. Phrases such as Worcester magazine hair styling are not necessarily indicative of specific accomplishments. It is crucial to be as specific as possible with your wording.
Choose your words carefully
Because resumes are typically less than two pages, it is important that each word carries significance. This applicant tends to use generic words that prevent the skills and experiences from standing out. In the experience section, the phrase get clients ready for service lacks imagination. This would be a good opportunity to discuss building relationships with clients, and more unique words would work better.
The education section does not need to be elaborate
The education section is important for listing academic experience and all relevant coursework. The applicant has added a paragraph explaining her school experience. Some of the academic achievements listed here would make more sense in the accomplishments section. Note also the grammar and spelling in this section is sloppy, which can discredit your resume from serious consideration. Creating a standout resume is not always easy, and you may consider seeking professional assistance to ensure that yours is the best possible representation of your experience and qualities.
