Your resume is an essential piece in finding a new position and can make a major difference in the success of your job search. Potential employers sift through many resumes to find the right candidate, and your resume can easily get lost in a sea of paper. There are many common mistakes that potential candidates make that can get your resume tossed. However, we have a hair stylist resume sample that we have had reviewed by experts. Review some of the common issues and easy ways to fix them to begin to build your own resume.
Take Advantage of the Summary Section
The summary portion of your resume is your one opportunity to provide a clear conception of your personality along with your relevant experience. The section should be 4-6 lines long and written in paragraph form. Make sure that you are taking advantage of this space and clearly explaining your experience. While the potential candidate provides some important skills, they need to work on adding in some important personality traits. This would also be a good spot for the candidate to clearly state their years of experience in the field.
Make Sure To Use Bullet Points
In the experience section of your resume, you want to make sure to use bullet points to list the skills you have learned. Hiring managers are only spending a matter of minutes looking through your experiences. Therefore, you want to make them easy to read. Here the potential candidate does not use bullet points, and it is difficult to distinguish their skills. This becomes particularly important as some of her experiences extend to a second line. As such it’s hard to see where one skill ends and another begins. Each bullet point should be immediately followed by a clear specific action word. There are a few places here where the candidate includes an adverb in front of the action, for example, Efficiently checked and Promptly fielded. While this is tempting you want your skills to stand out more by simply using the clear verbs.
Make Your Descriptions Concise
You want to make sure that each skill is only one concise sentence long. Here the potential candidate did not separate skills. For example, they listed Sanitized workstations and salon equipment for safety purposes.Completed continuing education and training to stay up to date with new trends and techniques and Efficiently checked guests in.Addressed all member concerns with patience. Each of this items should be split into two separate points. Secondly, some of their descriptions get a little long. For example, they list Employed a variety of hair style techniques, including curling and straightening with necessary products, equipment and supplies. While you want to be specific, you want to make sure that the skills standout. This could be easily shortened to Employed a variety of hair style techniques, including curling and straightening
Make Sure To Focus Education On Relevant Skills
Overall, this potential candidate does a nice job of listing important relevant courses. However, they do not need to include their attendance record. You do not want to include GPAs or records under education unless you have just recently graduated. This candidate should let the relevant courses stand out more by removing their attendance record.
