Your resume is a chance to really sell yourself to a hiring manager. It allows you to showcase why you are the best person for the job, but if it is filled with mistakes, it can actually show the hiring manager why you aren’t right for the job. Make Sure Your Resume Presents Enough Information
While this resume sample has all the important sections, it really isn’t offering a lot of information. Each section needs to be fleshed out more with details and information that will really show this applicant’s abilities, skills, accomplishments and past experience. The summary section, for example, is like your basic sales pitch that tells the hiring manager why he or she should keep reading your resume and why he or she should hire you. It needs to be a four to six line paragraph that gives a solid overview of your experience and skills. The summary section of this sample resume is just one sentence that doesn’t say anything that makes the applicant stand out. In fact, the sentence – I have been doing landscaping and tree work for a little over ten years – is rather general and could actually be something written by anyone who has worked in this field. It needs to have more details and explain why this applicant stands out from others.
Make Sure Sections Are Presenting the Correct Information
Each section of the resume has a specific purpose. For example, the accomplishments section is designed to help you highlight some of the major achievements of your career. This is where you tell the hiring manager why you are unique and valuable. This section needs to have quantitative data , if possible, and should include at least three achievements. As with the summary, the accomplishments section of this sample resume is rather general and could apply to many other applicants. It isn’t highlighting anything special that makes this applicant different from all the other applicants. Since this isn’t a mandatory section, it should just be removed from this resume.
Use the Proper Formatting So Your Resume Looks Professional
Since your resume needs to be easy for the hiring manager to read, you want to be sure to use the proper formatting. In the experience section, for example, the job duties should be in a bullet list and not a paragraph. Using the proper formatting will help make it easier for the hiring manager to quickly read through the resume and makes your resume look clean and crisp. It also helps to avoid any confusion caused by improper formatting.
Above all else, when you are finished writing your resume, make sure you proofread. You can’t rely on spell checkers or grammar checkers to catch every error. There are certain things that only a human eye can catch. For example, the items in a bullet list should always start with a capital letter and should never have ending punctuation. Also, any abbreviations should be avoided, and acronyms should be written out. Then there are typo errors, like the start date in the experience section that says 1753. No checker would have caught this, and it is huge error that takes away from the professionalism of the resume. You may also want to have someone else read over your resume since sometimes an outside eye can catch things you will overlook.
