Creating an effective summary
Your summary is how you will introduce yourself and create a first impression with employers. In this section, you should write about what work experiences you have had, how long you have been working in relevant fields, what skills you have accumulated, and what professional traits make you unique. Total, the summary should be about four lines long, which is the primary mistake with this sample summary. Everything that is in this summary is well written and relevant, but more should be added. Notice that it does not mention any specific previous working experience. Finally, make sure that you do not include any objectives or goals in your summary. It can be assumed that your goal is to earn the job you are applying for.
The highlights section is meant to communicate your acquired skills. This highlights section is nearly perfect. It should be two columns of three or four bullet points each. A few of the points are repetitive, however, such as Sociable and outgoing and Enthusiastic and positive personality. You cannot afford to waste space and words repeating yourself at any point in your resume.
Formatting your experiences section
After your summary and listing your skills, move on to your experiences section. This will form that core of your resume that will tell employers the most about you. For this reason, it is vital that you are able to organize the information in a way that makes it easy for employers to read. Each position should have about five to eight bullet points, but your currently held job can be a little more extensive. Take a look at how this sample formats the experiences: Gaming Bartender/Server 03/2012 to 09/2013 The Lodge Group Las Vegas, NV
In terms of organization, this is an especially strong section. The information is clear and easy to read. The bullets for the first position are a little too long, but it is not too distracting. Its main mistake is failing to start each point with a strong action verb. It can be easy to accidentally start with an adverb, such as quickly or accurately. Writers commonly mistakenly start with responsible for as well. After making these changes, it may look like this: Gaming Bartender/Server 03/2012 to 09/2013 The Lodge Group Las Vegas, NV
Finally, this resume may benefit from adding an optional section. There is a little extra space at the bottom that should be filled. Lengthening the summary will accomplish this, but if the experience section is shortened slightly, the writer could add information about their accomplishments after the highlights, or affiliation or certification information at the end. It is important to remember that these sections are optional, so you should not include them unless you feel the information you could communicate with them is especially impressive. Never include a section unless you have at least three points that you can add to them. Turn to LiveCareer when you need help crafting your resume.
