Resumes are the first chance you have at introducing yourself to your potential employer. A resume needs to be professional and follow a standard set of rules that applies across the board. The following front office manager resume sample has been analyzed by resume experts and its mistakes have been listed for your benefit. Studying other resumes and learning their strengths and weaknesses can help you craft your own ideal resume to land your dream job.
Give yourself the credit your deserve in your summary
Summaries are the first section that a potential employer reads. This means that the summary is extra-important, and should receive an appropriate amount of attention from a hopeful applicant. Your summary is your chance to show yourself off in a way that captures the attention of a reader and makes sure that they continue reading. WRONG: Summary Front Desk Agent successful at improving customer satisfaction ratings through exemplary service. Reliable, motivated and willing to go the extra mile to increase guest satisfaction and comfort. This summary is quite brief and leaves a lot to be desired. Summaries should function as a written 30-second elevator pitch in paragraph form. Sentence fragments can be used, but there should be at least four lines of content and not much more than six. Giving yourself only two sentences or two lines of content doesn’t help to elevate the interest of a potential employer, while four or five lines of relevant and important qualifications can.
Try to divide out your highlights
Highlights used to be a common section in resumes, but today most resumes include either a skills section or an accomplishments section instead. Some resumes include both if applicants have enough information to flesh out that much space. WRONG: Highlights
Accomplishment sections should include statistics about quantifiable achievements or rewards you’ve gained through other occupations. In the case of this resume, there are no “accomplishments” to speak of, and so the highlights section turns into a skills section. Each column should have at least three items, but not more than eight. Pack these bullet points with keywords and relevant experience, and stay away from generalizations like “dependable” or “hard-working.”
Use bullet points and use them wisely
It’s a good rule of thumb to assume that whenever you begin a list you should start using bullet points. Bullet points help divvy up important content and highlight relevant keywords and qualification phrases. They can also show you where you have too much information, and where you have too little.
