One of the most important things you can do to prepare for creating a resume is to look at real-life samples from other job-seekers in your field. We’ve collaborated with resume experts to show you common errors in this forklift driver resume sample so that you can avoid making the same mistakes.
Check Your Formatting
Something very strange has happened with the formatting in this sample. This could be an attempt at creativity, or it could be a result of copying and pasting between various word processing programs. Either way, be sure to preview your resume in whatever format your prospective employer will be receiving it, so that you can see odd formatting mistakes and correct them before submitting your application and resume. Also check for unnecessary spaces and extra blank lines.
Begin With Your Most Recent Position
When listing employment history, always begin with your current position, if you have one. An exception to this rule would be a functional resume, where you would list your most relevant position first. Even then, try to group similar experiences together in chronological order. This sample should be a simple chronological resume, because all of the work experience is related.
Use the Correct Tense and Voice
Always begin your bullet points with an action word. Use the present tense when describing what you do at your current position, and the past tense when describing what you did in previous positions. Wrong: stand up reach lift driver, 02/2014 to Current nike-converse logs. Ontario, CA
Right: Stand-up Reach Lift Driver, 02/2014 to Current Nike-Converse Logs Ontario, CA
Avoid Overuse of Keywords
Because you want your application to stand out as relevant to the job you’re seeking, it is important to include keywords related to that specific position. However, the most important thing is to write in a natural way that is easy for a person to understand. This job-seeker has a history of work as a forklift operator, so that particular phrase shows up again and again in the text. This is not a problem when the keyword phrase is used naturally. However, in the summary statement the phrase is overused and comes across as very awkward. Eliminate redundant phrases and be as concise as possible without omitting important details. Wrong: forklift driver with 5 years in forklift operation and distribution logistics. Successfully reduces company costs through efficient, high quality work. Forklift Operator offering extensive forklift and end rider operating skills, as well as a background in shipping and receiving software and documentation. Right: Forklift driver with 5 years of extensive forklift, end rider and distribution logistics experience. Efficient, high quality worker. Background in shipping and receiving software and documentation.
The final step before submission is proofreading. Never skip this important step. In this resume, there are several instances where words that should be capitalized are not, including school and company names, cities and job titles (when used as headings). It also appears that the word Number was inserted in blue as a place holder, with the writer intending to insert specific information later. A quick proofreading session would have identified all of these simple errors and, if they had been corrected, the resume as a whole would have been much stronger.
