If you include a Highlights section, include only critical overviews of your qualifications
The purpose of a highlights section is to provide a well-crafted, concentrated message that outlines why you are the most qualified candidate for the job. In the sample resume, the candidate uses the Highlights section to list skills and competencies. By so doing, the hiring manager can mistakenly think that one of the highlights of the career of this individual is CPR training and not his years of on-the-job management experience. WRONG: Highlights
RIGHT: Skills and Competencies
By moving the bullet points under Highlights to a Skills and Competencies section, the information can be displayed after the Work Experience section and have the proper amount of emphasis.
Include specific details of your successes in the work experience section
The work experience section is important to show how you were successful in your previous jobs and how this success prepared you to be the best candidate for the new job for which you are applying. Use bullet points to outline three to four major qualifications you gained from your job that relate most to the job for which you are applying. In the foreman resume sample, in one job description, there is too little detail regarding previous work experience. In another job description, there is excessive, irrelevant information. WRONG: Experience 01/2011 – Current A & M Reinforcing – El Cajon, California Foreman/General worker Manage and assist with the installation Rebar and Post-tension reinforcing 02/2000 – 01/2011 Davidson Reinforcing – San Marcos, California Foreman/Field Superintendent/General Installer Started as rebar installer received cross training and certification in post tension placement. Use consistent capitalization
A resume should have consistent and correct capitalization. In the foreman resume sample, capitalization of phrases after bullet points is inconsistent. In some cases, the second word is capitalized , while in other phrases, the second word is not capitalized. In general, only capitalize the first word after the bullet point. WRONG: Highlights
RIGHT: Skills and Competencies
