Your resume is the most effective tool you have to get hiring managers to notice you and call you for an interview. It can be hard to think of ways to make your resume stand out in among all the other job applications flooding the market. Omit personal information from your resume
It is generally not considered appropriate to include personal information such as religious affiliation, family status or hobbies on your resume. The only exception would be if the position is with a faith-based institution and the employer has a legitimate requirement that the employee profess that faith. Employers need to know your name and contact information, education, experience and professional skills and accomplishments. This applicant made a mistake in showcasing her faith, especially right at the beginning of her Summary section, which should have been more appropriately used to introduce the applicant’s professional qualifications.
Include a Skills section
This sample resume includes a Highlights section that lists some impressive and valuable soft skills, all of which are relevant to her performance as a food services staff supervisor. However, she is missing a Skills section that would detail specific knowledge and proficiency that is key to this position, such as operating equipment, specific supervisory tasks and other relevant information that would show that she is a qualified candidate. The applicant also states in her Education section that she took an introductory business class. Her Skills section might include the concepts she learned, highlighting the ways in which she utilized them in the workplace.
Accomplishments should be relevant to the position
As recommended, this candidate presents an Accomplishments section. However, while her academic achievements are impressive, they should be listed in the Education section, since they are not relevant to the position she is applying for. This section is a great place to highlight professional achievements, such as completing an important project, receiving a promotion or award, or going above and beyond the call of duty in the course of your work.
Make sure your Education section includes only relevant information
This resume’s Education section presents a number of errors that need to be corrected. As with work experience, your educational history should be presented chronologically, with your most recent degree or certificate appearing first. Further, the applicant’s plans to transfer should also be omitted here, as they are not specifically relevant to the position. While many employers will assume that a student applying for such a position is not likely to stay in it for the long term, stating so upfront on your resume will create an unfavorable impression. Finally, the information about taking an introductory business class should have been presented in a Skills section. Some other errors are corrected in the following example.
