No matter what type of work you are hoping to get into, it can be hugely beneficial to read resume samples to get a better idea of how yours should be formatted. To help you out with this endeavor, we asked our experts to examine a food service worker resume sample and point out all the aspects of it that can be made better. Take all of these tips to heart the next time you have to work on a resume.
Format information under work experience with bullet points, not paragraphs
Hiring managers will have a ton of resumes to go through no matter what the specific job is, so you want to make yours as easy to read as possible. One way to do that is to use bulleted lists under your job history instead of paragraphs, which can be long and clunky on the page. As we can see on this sample resume, the material given for her time at In-N-Out Burger is just one long paragraph when it should be written like this:
This list looks much nicer on the page, so all your work experience should be written in this manner.
Use a consistent tense whether it is present or past
Take a close look at the list given above. Each point begins with a verb, but the verbs are all in varying tenses. You want to retain a sense of consistency throughout your resume, so if you are talking about a job where you are currently employed, then you would want the verbs to be in the present tense. Former jobs should be written in the past tense, but since she currently works at In-N-Out Burger, we would want to rewrite the list to go like this:
Remove information about high school if you have been to college
Many people want to include as much information as they can on their resume because they think it will make them look more impressive. However, if it has been a while since you were in high school and you have a college degree, then that is one thing that can be left out. You want to show a prospective employer where you are professionally in your career now and not focus on aspects of your life that are in the distant past.
