When youre engaged in the competitive modern job market, anything that can put you ahead of the game should be investigated. To that end, taking the time to examine other sample resumes in your field for strengths and weaknesses is a great place to start. With the help of several experts, we have demonstrated this process for you with a Financial Account Executive resume sample, pointing out a few of its major problems and stating how to address them in your resume.
Expand your summary section
With more people than ever looking for jobs these days, recruiters want to see a summary section that is four to six lines in length covering the highlights of the rest of the resume. This way, should they decide you give you a second look or even bring you in for an official interview, they can easily reference the key points and ask you to elaborate and impress. Be sure to include, in addition to some personality traits, allusions to a few of your major skills sets and previous job experiences. If you can get the recruiters interested enough to continue reading, youre already at an advantage.
Get specific with your accomplishments
This writer actually has a few good items to include in his accomplishments section in spite of the fact that it takes up less than one line. The problem is that he states things in such a vague way as to invite the reader to question whether they were truly impactful actions. You want to have a minimum of three bulleted items in this section; otherwise, incorporate them into your experience descriptions. With each recognition or action you list, try to incorporate actual numbers as much as possible so there are no questions about the significance of your contributions. This also has the bonus effect of showing readers that you took the time to research these exact figures, hinting at a level of thoroughness and precision that any hiring manager can respect.
The importance of chronology
While it may be tempting to detail your longest or most prestigious job first in the experience section, as the writer of this sample resume does, it is common practice to list your employment from most to least current instead. Even if you dont have many responsibilities at your current job or you simply havent been working there very long, the idea behind this chronological approach is to show you next potential employer the types of work with which you are most familiar. If there is significant overlap between the duties you perform in your current job and the job to which you are applying, companies are more likely to hire you simply because they know they will not have to spend as much time training you as they would someone in an unrelated field. Additionally, take care to express the detail of each previous position in bulleted form, even if the information is brief, as it makes everything easier to read.
