Don’t skimp on your summary
Most resumes should start with a professional summary, giving a hiring director a brief pitch by which they can remember you and your most significant achievements. Write your resume in first person
Because everything on a resume is about what you have done, all items, including in the summary and work experience, should be in first-person, not third-person, even when there is no pronoun. Verbs should be singular, not plural. If you’re unsure what voice you’re using, try reading out the phrase using “I.” In this resume sample, the phrase “Possesses professional demeanor” in the summary should be “Possess professional demeanor,” as the correct verb is “I possess,” not “I possesses.”
Include all dates of employment
Your work experience is a crucial part of your resume. For potential employers to be completely informed as to your work history, include both the starting and ending dates for every position. You can use either month and year or just the year, as long as you’re consistent across all positions. If you are still working at your latest position when you submit the resume, date it as from the start date to “present.” On this resume sample, the first position listed has no end date, making it unclear how long the candidate held this job.
Make your responsibilities and achievements stand out
Unlike the opening summary, all duties and accomplishments listed in your work experience should be in separate bullet points, never in paragraph format. A block of text later in the resume is less likely to be read completely; a hiring manager going through many resumes is more inclined to skim it, missing salient details. By formatting the items in a bullet pointed list, it’s obvious at a glance how many different achievements you’ve accomplished. Each item on the list should start with an action verb to emphasize what you’ve done. Include as many specific details as possible, such as frequency or statistics. Avoid using phrases like “responsible for,” and don’t repeat words, unless they are professional terms with no equivalent synonyms. Wrong: Responsible for making credit decisions. Establish, maintain, and enhance the credit product offered to the client, as well as insuring that client goals of establishing or reestablishing credit are met through timely payments.
