No Bullets for the Summary
Bullet points and miniscule phrases are the bread and butter of every resume, except when youre writing the Professional Summary. The summary is only meant to be 4 to 6 lines long. Like in the sample, you should avoid using pronouns while still writing in the first person. However, be sure to establish some flow between your long phrases and include general but compelling information about your career and talents. Remember, the work experience section contains all the gritty details, while the summary is just a brief overview of your professional merits. A revised summary could look like this: Motivated carhop with experience taking customers food orders, operating cash registers, checking internal food temperatures and safe food handling. Fast food worker skilled with preparing food orders quickly while simultaneously greeting customers and accurately managing the cash register. Hardworking carhop with a keen focus on food quality and excellent customer service. Meticulous fast food worker with precise and rapid order processing skills.
Accomplishments: Fill It or Skip It
Generally, only extremely experienced professionals have use for an Accomplishment section. In this portion of a resume, applicants put information regarding any awards or significant achievements. For example, a marketing director might put how she improved sales by 30 percent with a savvy marketing campaign. This applicant states she is recognized for going above and beyond. It would be more appropriate if she had an Employee of the Month award to match this statement. As is, there is not quantifiable evidence of achievement. Furthermore, this section calls for a minimum of three bullet points. Unless you can properly fill out this section, skip it. It isnt an integral part of the resume like the Education or Work Experience sections. Think of it as an extra and only use it if it adds to your resume. In this case, having such a small section detracts from the candidates other compelling merits. Thus, she should delete it and move the information to the appropriate work experience entry.
Work Experience: Balancing Too Much and Not Enough Information
In the sample, the applicant takes great care to provide plenty of information regarding her past work experiences. However, she overcrowds the space with too many bullet points.
