When you are searching for a job, it is likely that no other documents will be more important than your resume. Writing the highlights section
After you have completed the summary, list your skills and abilities in a skills highlight section. This should be a bulleted list that has two columns of three or four points each. You should cover a variety of different kinds of skills, but focus them around the job and field that you are applying for. As you can see, the highlights section in this sample is a little too long. The experience section is more important, so you want to minimize the time the reader spends in the highlights. Many of these bullets, such as Public relations expert, Excellent written and verbal communicator, Media relations, and Vendor relations or Floor set design and Visual Displays can be combined into a single point. You cannot afford to be repetitive in this section.
The accomplishments section
Listing some accomplishments can be an effective way to get the attention of employers, but remember that this section is optional. It can be extremely difficult to write accomplishments that are specific and tangible, so pay close attention to the pieces of information listed here. It is not good to be general or indirect. Increased annual sales to nearly 25% is as specific as possible. While the content of this section is strong, the formatting could use some work. A bulleted list would work better, and it is best to have at least three points. If the writer could find a third accomplishment to add, this section would be perfect.
Listing your experiences
Like the accomplishments section, your experiences should be listed as a bulleted list. Right now, the experience section takes the form of a large block of text that is not inviting or appealing at all. When organized into a list, it looks like this: Buyer 06/2007 to 12/2010 Enrich Los Angeles, CA
The information is much easier to read in this format. Also note that each point starts with a strong action verb and there are no personal pronouns. However, if this change was made to the entire section, this already long resume would become enormous. You should aim for five to eight bullets for each position you have held, so some can be removed from this sample, but it also lists five positions, which is quite a lot. The oldest two are simple cashier positions and can be removed or combined. It is more important to communicate a variety of experiences, rather than a lot of similar jobs.
As you may have figured out, the length of your resume is very important. It should be your intention to fit your entire resume on a single page. If you are covering more than 10 years of experience, you can bleed onto a second, but only if you cannot properly communicate everything you need to with one page. Some techniques for shortening this resume have already been explored, but it also may be beneficial to align the text in the experience section farther to the left to eliminate some of that wasted space.
