Do not use personal pronouns anywhere in your resume
The place to include personal statements about oneself is in the cover letter. These do not belong in a resume. Take out personal pronouns to appear more professional and make the resume read more easily. Think of statements in your resume as first-person sentences with the personal pronouns removed. WRONG: I am a energetic, highly motivated and detail-oriented person. works well with a team or by myself I work in a mold line running a press that molded particle boards into panels RIGHT: Energetic, highly motivated and detail-oriented person. Works well with a team or independently. Work in a mold line running a press that molds particle boards into panels.
Double and triple check to make sure spelling and grammar are correct
This is one of the easiest mistakes to avoid in your resume, and one of the first a reader will notice. Do not just rely on a spellcheck, revise the whole document thoroughly yourself. If your grammar skills are not very strong, get someone knowledgeable about the language the resume is being written in to help you revise it, be it an acquaintance or professional. WRONG:
If the individual has multiple awards or notable accomplishments, a separate section can come before the Experience section to highlight these
A small amount of college education and certification of any kind are no accomplishments. This kind of information is better relegated to the education section, which also makes this a matter of separating your information into appropriate categories, and avoiding redundancy or repetition. If there are no awards or accomplishments worth mentioning, then forego this section. It does not help to mention the same education or certification twice, especially if one time is in the wrong category.
All lists should be in bullet point format
The experience section will read much more smoothly and appear to be more extensive if a bullet point format is used. Don’t forget to start each bullet point with a strong action verb, to show you didn’t just perform the tasks, but in what way they were performed. There should be 5-8 points per job section, so find creative ways to expand your list while still staying within the duties performed. You want to have tense agreement as well, so use present tense for a current job and past tense for a previously held position. End each bullet point with a period. You will also want things to be in order from most recent on top to earliest on bottom. WRONG: Experience valley enterprises June 2011 to September 2011 factory worker Ubly, MI I work in a mold line running a press that molded particle boards into panels Primeland Farms July 2012 to Current Farm Hand Ruth , MI
RIGHT: Experience Primeland Farms July 2012 to Current Farm Hand Ruth , MI
