Write a Compelling Summary
Your professional summary is your only opportunity to use a paragraph format in your resume. In the sample, the applicant appears to insinuate bullets with the summary statements. Like in the sample, you shouldnt use pronouns even though you write from the first person. Overall the information is very relevant and compelling, but the presentation is lacking. Outside of the summary, all phrases should be paired with bullet points. Inside the summary, the phrases should be in paragraph form and offer insight into your professional merits. Without going into the specifics of your work history, convey your most compelling qualities as a professional. Use strong action words to fill and begin your phrases. For example: Expert Facilities Technician with ten years of experience working with DDC, JC and Trane Summit controls and 25 years of experience in HVAC and electrical repair. Focused professional dedicated to meeting goals and exceeding customer service standards. The above phrases would be a great start to a revised professional summary. The typical length for this section is 4 to 6 phrases or lines.
Fill or Skip the Accomplishments Section
First, lets establish the difference between the accomplishments and highlights/skills sections. The former is for awards and measurable professional achievements, while the latter is reserved for short phrases that detail your abilities. In the sample, the candidate does an excellent job differentiating the two and using relevant information. The issue is that the accomplishments section is too small. While the highlights/skills section is a standard component of a professional resume, the accomplishments section can be excluded if it is not relevant to the position or individual. In the current format, the sample looks to have only two entries in this section, while the accomplishments section requires at least three entries. Fill and Format Your Experience Section
As with most other sections, the experience section warrants short phrases paired with bullets. Each phrase should give insight in your past or current job duties and there should be 5-8 bullets for every entry. This allows you to give enough information without crowding the area. Fewer bullets will not give a complete idea about your experience. An updated entry might look like: Facilities Maintenance Tech 301/2003 to Current City Of ChesapeakeChesapeake, VA
However, the main issue with this section is the overall lack of entries. In the professional summary, the applicant talks about 25 years of hands on experience, but fails to provide the evidence. If you have a particularly expansive career, you might be able to leave out your oldest jobs, but you still need include the bulk of your past posts.
