We understand that you want to get a good job. That is why our experts have broken down an automotive technician resume for you. This example will show you how you can take any career, even an accomplished one, and represent it more professionally. The following tips are intended to highlight ways to make your achievements sound as impressive as they are.
Always use bullets for lists
A large portion of your resume will be lists. To keep them organized and easy to read, bullets are the best choice. If a resume is difficult to read for any reason, it is likely to be skipped or skimmed. Paying attention to presentation will help you keep the attention of hiring managers to make sure they understand your value as a potential employee. Wrong: I was trained by my father and was put on payroll at 13 in his automotive repair garage. Graduated high school one year early. While working in Tucson, AZ, at Holmes Tuttle Ford fleet department, I received my Drivetrain Master with over 100 Ford certifications, ASE Master Technician certification & IMACA HVAC certification. My career at Schumacher Racing resulted in 3 Top Fuel World Championships, 36 event victories with 3 Indy national wins. I also accumulated over 500,000 miles driving a semi tractor race hauler. First month at Walt’s Hot Rods increased revenue threefold. Started my own automotive and performance shop in 2011. Right:
The bulleted format is clearly much easier to follow.
Short lists can look empty
This resume shows an example of when lists can appear too short. When it comes to work experience, you want to aim for five to eight points per list. While it can sometimes feel difficult to make a long enough list, keep in mind that every job requires problem solving and develops experience outside of the general job description. It is ok to cite specific examples of success. Wrong: Car Chief January 2000 to June 2010Schumacher Racing (US ARMY, NHRA, TOP FUEL) ? Brownsburg, IN Clutch, Engines, flow controls, data pack, ignition, bottom end, fabrication and welding (Lincoln Certified), truck driver, tractor and trailer maintenance. Right: Car Chief January 2000 to June 2010 Schumacher Racing (US ARMY, NHRA, TOP FUEL) ? Brownsburg, IN
The corrected example appears to have much more information at first glance. While the content of the information is relatively the same, the full-bodied presentation feels more impressive over the course of a quick read.
Certifications can have their own list
This resume lists a number of certifications among the accomplishments. While this is not necessarily wrong, the information can be organized in a cleaner fashion. Listing the certifications under education or even giving them their own heading can make it easier for an employer to quickly see the candidate’s official expertise. This is especially helpful in mechanic or certification heavy jobs. If you would like this level of detailed help applied to your own resume, then look no further than QuintCareer’s resume builder.
