To help you out, they went through an executive assistant resume sample and found several things that can be improved upon. Keep the following guidelines under consideration the next time you need to work on your resume, so you feel confident that you have made the best representation of your skills and experiences possible.
Separate summary from skills and accomplishments
This sample resume has a huge clunky paragraph at the top of her resume, which is not a good way to start it off. Your summary should consist of a few sentences that give a general overview of what you have to offer this new company, so it should be informative yet brief. If we take a look at this particular resume sample, we will see that this person has actually combined her summary with the skills and accomplishments section, which should be their own unique parts. To give you an idea of what this would look like, you should write out your skills like this: Skills
The same thing should be done for accomplishments
Ensure items in accomplishments sections are actually notable achievements
Many people like having a section devoted to their accomplishments on a resume because it shows that they have created noteworthy change in their previous places of employment. However, you really want to examine this section objectively and really decide that what you are putting are actually achievements and are not just general responsibilities you had to perform. For example, this resume sample has the following point listed under accomplishments:
This just sounds like an essential duty an executive assistant would need to perform, and it would not really set her apart from the other applicants. If you do not have at least three achievements to talk about, then it would be best to simply remove this portion entirely.
Make sure every job has a bulleted list
If we take a look at this resume sample, we will see that a couple of her previous workplaces do not have any description about what she did there. This particular sample has a really easy fix because she could just move the information listed under First Assistant and Administrative Assistant to the correct places. You do not have to vaguely discuss your responsibilities, and you should always clarify what exactly you did at every former place of work.
Give a date next to your education
At the very bottom of this sample resume, we see that she has a degree in Business Administration from Tompkins Cortland Community College. This can be a useful degree for the field she wants to enter, but there is no date given to signify when exactly she received this degree or if it is currently in progress. A hiring manager is going to want to know this information, especially if the degree is still in progress because that could affect whether or not the company hires you. Specifics are great when it comes to resume writing, so do not leave anything out.
