The following is an elementary school teacher resume sample that demonstrates a few errors that are relatively normative for today’s resumes- errors that you can avoid if you know what to look for.
Don’t forget the bullet points
A good rule of thumb when it comes to listing multiple relevant items of information is to use bullet points to do so. Bullet points help to separate out information and act as bright indicators of pertinent information for potential employers. Your resume will look ten times as professional and well-organized if you utilize bullet points the way they are meant to be used. They act as dividers of details that deserve their own space and attention from readers.
Don’t have too many details
While it is almost just as easy to have too few details, it is more commonly a problem to have too many. If you only have one relevant work experience to relate, that does not mean that you should list anything and everything that you can remember having to do for that job. Too many details make your resume look cluttered and disorganized. Collaborated with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning and student engagement. Took appropriate disciplinary measures when students misbehaved. Improved students’ reading levels through guided reading groups and whole group instruction. Created lesson plans in accordance with state curriculum and school-wide curriculum standards. Accepted coaching from fellow teachers and administrators and immediately incorporated feedback. Worked outside normal hours to be available to answer parent and student questions. Differentiated instruction according to student ability and skill level. Created and enforces child-based hands-on curriculum to promote student interest and receptive learning. Generally, work experience sections should have around 5-8 bullet points for each relevant position. Don’t forget to use bullet points with these lists, which will help you keep track of the most critical information and weed out details that may be unnecessary.
Remember that highlights are different from certifications, which are different from skills
Your sections need to be appropriately organized to best convey your relevant qualifications. Your skills are not the same as your licenses or your certifications. If you are trained in something specific that you were given a certificate for, this can go in a separate section after work and education. If you were trained but received no certificate, it can go in your education section. WRONG: Highlights
Skills are items like being computer proficient or being able to perform differentiated instruction. These are not necessarily “highlights,” and should not be called as such.
