Lengthen your summary
To start out, you need to create a summary to overview your skills, work experiences, and any professional traits you want to highlight. Take a look at this summary: Dedicated team player experienced in managing back office operations., including, but not limited to FedLine Advantage and Deposit Compliance. The content of this section is acceptable, but it is too short. Of course, you should strive to avoid any typographical errors, such as the poor punctuation. By including more information about the writers skills and work ethic, this summary could easily be extended. You should aim for about four lines with your summary.
The highlights section
When listing a highlight of your skills, make sure to only include important information. It should be two columns of three or four bullet points each. The section in this sample resume is too long, but many of the points are repetitive or unnecessary. Notice that there are two consecutive points that end with oriented and another two that start with excellent. Additionally, there is no need to including both Reliable and Dependable or People-oriented, Excellent communication skills, and Strong interpersonal skills. Removing or combining some of these points will improve the sections content as well as make it the appropriate length.
Organize your experience section
At a glance, the information included in the experience section is disorganized and intimidating. Because it has been formatted as a paragraph, rather than a bulleted list, it takes the form of a large block of text that is not easy to read. To make it more inviting, it could be formatted like this: Electronic Banking Department Manager 08/2004 to 05/2013 First Federal Bank Lexington, KY
The actual content of this section is spot on, starting each point with an action verb and avoiding personal pronouns. Besides there being more than five to eight points for each position, it is just the formatting that needed improvement.
Manage your length
The length of your resume says a lot about you. Any blank or wasted space will give a bad first impression to readers, even before they begin reading. There is a little empty space at the bottom of this resume, but it will be filled if the summary is lengthened and the experience section is changed as discussed above. If your resume is still too short, additional optional sections can be added, such as Achievements, Affiliations, Certifications, or Awards. Keep in mind that you should also strive to keep your resume from being too long. It should completely fill one page, but not bleed onto a second. To get started, use QuintCareer’s Resume Builder.
