If youre constantly on the lookout for ways to make yourself more marketable to potential employers, youre in luck. Studying sample resumes in your field of choice is one of the best ways to get an early head start on the competition when it comes time for hiring companies to make decisions. To give you an idea of how to do this, we have gotten together with several experts to analyze an Electrical Apprentice Sample Resume, identifying and elaborating upon a few of the major issues so that you can take the information and put it to use in a resume of your own.
Do more with your summary section
The days of condensing your purpose for applying for a job into a short objective statement at the top of your resume are past. Ideally, the summary section should be a four to six line elevator pitch that encourages the reader to want to find out more about you. As we find out later on in this sample resume, this applicant has quite a few practical skills that are directly relevant to the Electrical Apprentice position. You should have given the reader a taste of your specific skillsets right from the start as well as a few important personal soft skills that make you a good fit. Then, should a hiring manager like what he or she reads in your application, it will be easy to reference your qualities since theyll be highlighted right at the top.
Balance out the highlights and skills section
Odd as it may sound, the physical appearance of your resume conveys a great deal to readers about your priorities and sense of conciseness before they actually read a single word. In the case of this applicants highlights section, eight bulleted skills are listed on the left column, while only three are listed on the rightan aesthetically displeasing unbalance. It is possible that because of the relative brevity of the rest of his resume, the writer thought that have one large column of highlights and skills would take up more space on the page and make the document appear longer and more impressive than it currently is. Taking the time to balance these things out in your resume allows you more room to elaborate on the all-important experience section later on. WRONG:
Use a correctly formatted and expanded experience section
Firstly, unlike this sample resume, yours should list the positions you have had from most to least current, rather than the other way around. Employers first want to see where youre at right now so they can get a better idea of how much training and time-investment youll require before youre ready to work for them. Secondly, the extreme brevity of this applicants experience section has the potentially disastrous effect of making it appear as though he had few responsibilities or accomplishments in spite of his years in the field. Even if the tasks youve performed in the past are somewhat simple in nature, elaborate on the processes you used to get them done. Hiring managers will take note of your thoroughness on the job which is something any reputable company highly values. Hopefully the analysis of this Electrical Apprentice resume sample provides you with some ideas to improve your own.
