Ensure your summary is personal
In this resume example, the applicant’s summary is too short and reads more like a basic job description than something about the applicant herself. It doesn’t offer any information to display her unique skills or job-related talents, which should always be the first information a potential employer sees. When writing a summary, be sure to include information about your most impressive skills and relevant experience. Include a section highlighting your skills
This resume includes a great list of quantifiable accomplishments, but it lacks a specific section for skills. Use bullet points to highlight skills you used at your past jobs. This is fine if the skill only applies to that job, but if it applies to more than one previous job description, it’s a solid skill and better suited for closer to the top of the page. Avoid showing gaps in your employment history
If you can, find ways to downplay gaps in your employment history. This resume shows the applicant was between jobs for three months between December 2009 and March 2010. If she had listed only the years of employment, the potential employer might have assumed she worked one job until the end of 2009 and started the other in the beginning of 2010. The applicant could then have been more specific and explained the gap during the interview process. As it stands, an employer might pass her over completely in favor of a resume with no discernable gaps.
Don’t give too much space to the education section
Most employers favor solid experience over a large list of degrees, so unless you are a recent graduate applying for an entry-level position, the education section of your resume is least important. Unless the job listing specifically asks for all education information, it’s enough to mention only the highest degree you hold in any field. This resume lists both an associate degree and a bachelor’s degree, but only needed to mention the bachelor’s since they were both in fashion merchandising management.
Vary your word choices
Just like you wouldn’t want to read a book that used the same words or phrases repeatedly, a potential employer will become bored with a resume that does so. At first glance, this resume overuses “create,” “manage” and “receives,” which could have been avoided by using an online thesaurus.
