One of the best ways to become a great writer for anything is to read things that are related to what you want to write. Therefore, it stands to reason that you would become a better resume writer by reading resumes related to the field you want to enter. Add bullet points for accomplishments and work experience
If we take a look at this sample resume, then we will see that the accomplishments section gives every individual sentence its own line while the information under Experience is given as paragraphs. Both these sections are slightly off, and the writer would want to add bullet points to fix it. Bullet points help make it abundantly clear when one point ends and another point begins. Adding bullet points to the accomplishments is easy enough, but if you were to do it for his time working at Servicemaster Clean, it would look like this.
Every bullet point in your experience section should begin with a strong verb
Most of the points in the previously mentioned list do not begin the right way. You want to capture the readers attention right off the bat, and a good way to do that is to begin every bullet point with an active verb. You also want to be sure that all those verbs are written in the correct tense. That means writing in the past tense for previously held jobs while writing in the present tense for current job. Rewriting the above list would be pretty easy and could go like this:
Have at least five points for every job
Generally speaking, you want to be as detailed as possible when discussing your previous employment history, and that means having a minimum of five bullet points for every job. The above list has four, and although the writer might be able to get away with that, his most recent job only has one sentence. He would want to add a few more points to his time working at Oklahoma Disaster Restoration in order to give the most comprehensive picture of what he did.
Watch out for gaps in employment
Looking at this sample resume, we see that he stopped working at Servicemaster Clean in January 2011, but he did not start working at his most current job at Oklahoma Disaster Restoration until January 2012. That is a full year where we do not know what he was doing. You do not want an employer to get the impression that you simply were not working for an entire year. You should not lie about your past, and there might be a good reason why you were not working like you got injured and had to take a year off. Having a gap is not necessarily a deal breaker, but you should be prepared to talk about it. Your job hunt will be a lot more fruitful if you know the proper way to write resumes.
