Sell your skills in the professional summary correctly
The professional summary should sound more like a sales pitch than a personal statement or objective. Each sentence should begin with an active verb and describe relevant experience, skills, traits and education that an applicant can bring with her to the job. Holly doesnt describe very much about her skills, and instead spends a lot of space on irrelevant details or wordiness. She needs to adjust this section to follow the rules mentioned previously. WRONG: Career Overview I have only had four jobs since I was eighteen years old. The list consists of Fudruckers, RGIS Inventory Specialists, David’s Bridal, and Easter Seals Tristate (formerly Jewish Vocational Services.) All of these are very different, however I am a quick learner and I pride myself on learning new skills and preforming at 110%. For the last six years I have been employed by Easter Seals Tristate (formerly Jewish Vocational Services), I have learned a lot while serving the developmentally disabled individuals that I have enjoyed getting to know. Patience, multi-tasking, the importance of doing a job correctly, and the necessity of teamwork. RIGHT: Career Overview More than six years of experience in client services, specializing in physically disabled individuals with a range of needs. Motivated to learn new skills and provide a company with efficiency. Work patiently with different temperaments and problems, with the ability to balance all aspects of the job. Detail-oriented and focused on maintaining clear records that always fall into compliance regulations.
Avoid making personal statements outside of the professional summary
After the core strengths section, Holly includes a section called professional value offered. This isnt a section that should ever be included on a resume. An employer wont find any of this information useful, and it may slow them down enough to damage her chances at a job. Any important information from this section should either go in the professional summary or core strengths section above it.
Always include bullet points whenever a list appears
Bullet points create obvious clarity in a resume before anyone ever reads it. This piece of punctuation is especially important in the experience section that must contain quite a few bits of information. Bullet points keep this area well-organized and easy to read. Holly doesnt include bullet points in this section, and she doesnt put her job details in a vertical list. Before she sends the resume off to anyone, she needs to make sure she adjusts this section. It will help her resume come across as professional and polished if she does.
