Be sure to take note of these edits as they can help you avoid making similar mistakes in your own resume.
Pay attention to format
Perhaps one of the most important aspects of your resume is the format. Employers do not have endless time to devote to each application, and so you want to make sure your information is presented in a clear and organized fashion. Minor details such as indenting and spacing can have an impact on how easy your resume is to read. The applicant has provided some great information in the Career Focus/overview section, but the information here should be a concise paragraph. Notice the difference in these two formats: WRONG: Results-oriented Direct Sales Representative/Customer Service Rep. with over 20 years of experience selling Cable, Internet and Telephone Services. Driven to excel in Sales Performance Excellent in Customer Service Continue Lasting Relationships with Customer in the Quality of Service and referrals RIGHT: Results-oriented Direct Sales Representative/Customer Service Rep. with over 20 years of experience selling cable, internet and telephone services. Driven to excel in sales performance, excellent in customer service, and dedicated in maintaining lasting relationships with customers. Notice how simple changes in format and capitalization allow this section to be more readable and more memorable.
Avoid using italics and color
The applicant has used italics in the accomplishment section and this is not a recommended format. Notice also that the different sections are in red. It is important that your resume stands apart from the other candidates; however, formatting is not an area to be bold. Your resume should speak for itself through what is on it and not how different it looks.
Always use bullets for listing items
Enhancing readability also means using bullets anytime you are listing different items. This separates texts and allows the reader to move from one point to another quickly and effortlessly while retaining the information. Notice the difference between these two formats: WRONG: Account Representative for Direct TV Sales02/2001 to 01/2007 Multiband CorporationSan Francisco, California Contract Sales for MultiBand USA.
