A prospective employers first impression of you will be what they see on your resume. Weve asked experts to evaluate a dialysis nurse resume sample to determine common mistakes and give ways to avoid them. The following points will help make sure your resume looks its best and give hiring managers incentive to call you for an interview.
Include relevant professional titles
If you have professional credentials that are relevant to the job youre applying for, include them after your name. For example, a registered nurse applying for a nursing job should include RN after his or her name.
Make sure your summary is sufficiently detailed
While you want your professional summary to be succinct, you also want it to include enough detail to provide a comprehensive overview of your experience. This is going to be the first thing the prospective employers read about you, so it should be enticing enough that they want to learn more about you. This section should be 4-6 lines and should include an overview of your experience, two or three major skill sets, and some personality traits or soft skill sets relevant to the position. It should always be in paragraph format. Also, it is not necessary to include an objective, either as a standalone statement or as part of the summary. The reader knows the purpose of your resume. Use this section only to pitch your skills and experience.
Include Sections on Skills and Accomplishments before the Experience section
The section after the Summary should be Skills. This is your opportunity to showcase talents and experience. A table with short phrases relevant to the industry is the best format; do not use sentences or put periods after the items in the table. Use at least 3-4 items per column but no more than 7-8. If you can list three or more accomplishments, also include an Accomplishments section. Otherwise, continue on to Experience. In the example resume, the Accomplishments section should be placed above the Experience (Work History) section, and should be in bulleted list format.
Give full locations of employers
In this example, the employers locations inconsistent. This is confusing and unprofessional. A full address is not necessary, but every position should contain identical information, even if it was at the same location.
Use bulleted lists in the Experience section
The Experience section should also be in bulleted list format. Positions should contain a mix of duties, responsibilities, achievements, contributions, and accomplishments. Start each bullet point with an action word; do not use responsible for. Try not to repeat words. In the example resume, there are no bulleted lists in the Experience section, and the duties listed are too wordy and repetitive.
