Our experts are dedicated to helping everybody have a better chance of getting their dream job by crafting a better resume. To do this, they examined a Dennys waitress resume sample to see if there are any general rules that can be learned from it that could apply to anyone, regardless of career field. They have a few points to make about this particular sample, so keep them in mind for future resume writing.
Skills should be distributed evenly between two columns
It is typically recommended that you should have anywhere between three and eight bullet points per column within a resumes Skills section. However, you can divide them up into two columns, so technically, you could have a maximum of 16 skills, which can really come in handy and impress a hiring manager. If you decide to have two columns for your skills, then you should do your best to distribute them as evenly as possible to make everything look nice. We see that 15 points are given in total, but 10 skills are given for the first one while five are offered for the second column. It would be better to have eight in one and seven in the other to achieve a greater sense of balance.
Make sure you actually have actual achievements under Accomplishments
If you have achieved certain recognitions throughout your career or education, then it is a great idea to include a separate section titled Accomplishments to make them stand out more. However, if you choose to do this, then you want to ensure that every point is actually an accomplishment as opposed to just being a general duty you had to do. For example, this sample contains the following statement:
This just sounds like something she had to do and is not particularly notable. This information should be moved down under Work Experience.
Talk about work history using bulleted lists
All of the material given under Work Experience on this sample is presented as full paragraphs when in actuality they should be given as bulleted lists. This will make the information easier to read through, and you definitely want to make things as easy as possible on a hiring manager. If we were to take the material given for her time working at Aarons as an example, it should be presented as such:
There should be five to eight points per workplace
You only have one or two pages to talk about why you are the best candidate for this new job, so you need to include as much information you can about yourself within that space. As can be observed above, there are only three sentences given for Aarons while a ton of points are given for her time working at Boscovs. The general rule to follow when talking about your professional experiences is that you want to have somewhere between five and eight bullet points for each job. This ensures that you give enough information to provide a hiring manager with a good overview of what you did at each job. It also creates a better sense of balance, so you do not have one job with a couple points while another job has a dozen or more.
