If you are in the process of applying for a new position, you will want to make the best first impression possible. This can be done by crafting an excellent resume that authentically showcases your unique qualifications and experiences. A well-written resume can help set you apart from other applicants. In order to help you out with this process, we have reviewed a sample Delivery Coordinator resume and highlighted areas that are problematic or could be improved. Be sure to take note of these areas as doing so can help prevent you from making the same common mistake on your own resume.
Start with a strong summary
The summary is an introduction to your resume and in many ways, your entire application. The best summaries are written in concise statements using vivid descriptions. Think of the summary like a sales pitch that will grab the attention of your reader. In this sample resume, the applicant has filled the summary with generic terms. Doing so does not make a very solid first impression, as these are terms that are quite common to hundreds of other resumes. Remember, you want your resume to stand out in a professional sense.
Always use bullets for listing items
Formatting is a crucial component of a successful resume. Although failing to use bullets might seem like a minor blunder, not having them can render the information difficult to navigate. Chances are, the employer reading your resume will have several others to read through, therefore you want to make sure his or her time spent with your application is maximized and not wasted. Note the difference in these two formats: WRONG: November 2012 to Current MenardsMount Prospect, ILDelivery Coordinator Worked closely with general managers and with department managers to have the department run smoothly, with on time deliveries and defective free products. Documented all the deliveries and prepared all the paperwork. Identified problems in the loads and resolved the issue before the loads went out. March 2012 to November 2012 MenardsHillside, ILDelivery Coordinator September 2010 to March 2012 MenardsHillside, ILCashier/ Service Desk Responsible for checking out guests in a timely manner. Accountable for money not being short or over. Handled the returns and helped out guests on the sales floor. RIGHT: November 2012 – Current Menards Mount Prospect, IL Delivery Coordinator
March 2012 – November 2012 Menards Hillside, IL Delivery Coordinator September 2010 – March 2012 Menards Hillside, IL Cashier/ Service Desk
Notice how simply adding bullets immediately improves the readability of the presented information.
Always include descriptive information
In the above example, the applicant has not listed information under the second job description. Doing so looks incomplete and should always be avoided. Even if work responsibilities for one job are similar to another, you should always try to express unique experiences gained.
