Creating an effective resume can be difficult and confusing, so our resume professionals have gone over a customer service waitress resume sample and discussed some common resume errors and the best methods of correcting them. Reviewing the following advice will help you improve your resume and eliminate mistakes.
Your Summary should introduce your qualifications
The Summary section at the top of your resume serves as a brief introduction to your most salient qualifications. It should be a concise statement that explains why you are well-qualified for the position you are applying for. This candidates Summary does a good job of listing outstanding qualifications, but could use some work in streamlining and refining phrasing. WRONG: My professional background is basically customer service. I pride myself on hospitality and wonderful customer service. I have mastered the concept of ” HOOTERS” from the FOH to BOH. RIGHT: Extensive background in customer service, including hostess, bus-girl and waitress training. Hospitable and friendly demeanor, with a commitment to providing excellent service at all times. Mastered the concept of HOOTERS from FOH to BOH. Experience with promotional activities, including up-selling merchandise.
Skills and Highlights sections showcase your abilities
On this sample, the candidate included a Highlights section but left it blank. The qualifications listed in her Accomplishments section are more appropriately distributed between Skills and Highlights sections, leaving just the special events as accomplishments. Typically, a Skills section will include specific knowledge or proficiency, while a Highlights section will list general characteristics that make the candidate suitable for the position in question. WRONG: Accomplishments Self-starter,responsible, organized trainer/ employee,self-motivated, teamwork participates, friendly, manners, proper etiquette, worldly, self-traveled,compassionated, confidence, cocktail waitress, catering, banquets, party promotions, liquor promotions, special events Service industry, tools- registers/ programs * Aloha *Micros *Microsoft/ Word *Social Media RIGHT: Skills
Use bullet points and proper formatting for all lists
Whenever you include a list in any section of your resume, be sure to use bullet points to mark each item on the list. This ensures a uniform presentation throughout your resume, which results in a more organized and visually appealing look. Varying your format, on the pother hand, makes your resume appear haphazard and messy, distracting employers from the substantive points you present. Bullet points make your qualifications stand out and easy to notice when busy hiring managers are skimming through many resumes at once. In this resume, the applicant varies her formatting, sometimes using bullet points, bullet points with asterisks and asterisks to highlight information. Other formatting errors include improper date format, failure to capitalize as appropriate, and inconsistent and improper phrasing in describing her job duties. Typically, an item on a list of work experiences should state the action performed in the past tense. WRONG: Waitress, hostess, bus girl, caterer/ driver September 2010 to March 2011 Famous Dave’s ?
