Your resume is a crucial component in getting a new job, and if yours is not up to an employers standards, you are going to be facing an uphill battle. Fortunately, our experts have some advice to offer that you can implement in your own resume. We had these experts read through a counter barista resume sample to see what mistakes could be corrected, and they have the following points to make.
Summary should be one paragraph
The reason why you should start your resume with a brief summary is so that the hiring manager gets a general idea of what qualities you would bring to the company. This is the first impression you are going to be making, so you definitely want to make it count. A summary should not be too long, but you also do not want just one sentence like this sample resume. A few more sentences should be added that go into what talents and experiences he possesses that would come in handy in this line of work.
Use bulleted lists when discussing experience
Although the summary should be a paragraph, everything underneath Experience should be a list. Formatting the material in this way will make the information easier to go through. Therefore, if we were to reformat the description given for his time working at Storks Bakery, it would go like this:
This list is a good start, but there is still more we can do with it.
Minimum of five points per position
Every job is different, and there may only be a couple things you really did during your time there. The list given above only has three points, but generally speaking, you should really do your best to get at least five. You want to give the employer the most detailed and comprehensive overview of your past experiences as you can. Therefore, it would be great if we could add a couple more points to the above list. You should really think hard about your past work because this will make your resume more attractive to hiring managers.
The other position on this sample resume talks about the time he spent working as a manager for Scottys Cleaners. However, the points given for it are very bland, and he essentially just says that he provided help at the counter and was a delivery driver. You want to be as descriptive as you can. A professional resume is no place to start selling yourself short, so we would want to add valuable details to every point for Scottys Cleaners. That list could go like this:
In most cases, remove high school education
Unless you are still a student in high school, there is no real reason to including it on your resume. This resume sample says that he got his diploma in 1989. A hiring manager is going to be more interested in the work experience this person has obtained since that time, so that is the area he should focus on. Removing the high school diploma would be best in this scenario. Plenty of help is available to help you get the perfect resume. One of the tools offered to everybody is QuintCareer’s Resume Builder.
