Writing an excellent resume that showcases your unique skills and qualifications is the best way to make a solid first impression on your potential employer. In order to help you out with this important process, we have reviewed a Corporate Store Assistant Manager sample resume and highlighted areas that are problematic or could use improvement. Pay close attention to these areas and avoid making the same mistakes in your own resume writing.
Avoid using pronouns
One of the most common mistakes applicants can make in their resume writing is using pronouns. Doing so is a form of writing more appropriate for the cover letter or other sections of your application. In this resume sample, the applicant has used first person in the summary section. This detracts from the professional tone that the resume should convey. Remember that the summary is your opportunity to make a brief and authentic sales pitch that will motivate the employer to continue reading your application. The strongest summaries are written in concise phrases and use strong, vibrant language.
Consolidate highlights section
The highlights/skills section is the place to pack your resume with keywords and phrases that you want to be associated with your professional profile. These skills can be broad, but should always stay relevant to the position you are applying for. Although this applicant has used the recommended table format for this section, there are too many items listed in each column. Remember that there should be no more than 8 items per column. The resume is short in nature and it is important not to overload the document with too much text. Instead, make every word count.
Always use bullets when listing items
Because the format of your resume is so important, you want to make sure that the material is presented in the most organized fashion possible. Using bullet points ensures that each description stands on its own and is memorable. Notice the difference between these two formats: WRONG: 01/2007 05/2008 Midwestern State Uiversity ? Wichita Falls, TX Graduate Assistant Responsibilities included: Grading, Research and critical analysis, Writing reports, Helping students, Memos and email, Interacting with students, faculty, and administration, and guest lecturing. 02/2005 -06/2006 Comanche Red River Casino ? RIGHT: 01/2007 05/2008 Midwestern State University ? Wichita Falls, TX Graduate Assistant
02/2005 -06/2006 Comanche Red River Casino ? Devol, OK Blackjack Dealer/ Table Games Operator
Notice that adding bullet points immediately improves the readability of the text.
Keep tenses consistent
In the above example, the applicant had not used the proper tense for describing a previous job experience. As a general rule of thumb, it is important to write in the past tense when describing a past position and to write in the present tense when describing a current position. Doing so improves the strength and consistency of your writing. Dont wait to get professional help with your resume writing.
