When you apply for a new position, be sure your resume makes an excellent first impression of you. In order to help you out with this important process, we have reviewed Construction Worker Laborer resume sample and outlined areas that need improvement or correction. Be sure to pay close attention to these changes and avoid making the same mistakes in your own resume writing.
Avoid using pronouns
One of the most common mistakes applicants make in their resume writing is using pronouns. Although using pronouns, especially the first person, may be appropriate for cover letters or other areas of the resume, doing so is not encouraged anywhere in the resume. In this resume sample, the applicant has used the first person in the summary. You should think of your summary as a brief sales pitch that provides an overview of your skill sets and qualities. Using pronouns in this section in particular can detract from the professional tone you are aiming for. Remember that the strongest summaries are written in phrases with vibrant language.
Always use bullets when listing items
The formatting of your resume is one of its most crucial components. Because your employer will have several resumes to read through, it is important that yours is as easy to navigate as possible. Using bullet points is a simple solution that increases the organization immensely. Notice the difference in these two entries: WRONG: Experience Laborer May 2013 to August 2013 Dynasty Remodeling ? Bowling Green, OH My responsibilities were,Be on time, alert, roof tear-offs,deck foundations, clean gutters, install drop ceilings, some electrical work Maintenance April 2005 to September 2006 Sunny Brook Apartments ? Toledo, OH My responsibilities were to maintain the property, remodel apartments, fix broken door handles ,electric switches, and light fixtures.Buy project materials. RIGHT: Experience Laborer May 2013 to August 2013 Dynasty Remodeling ? Bowling Green, OH
Maintenance April 2005 to September 2006 Sunny Brook Apartments ? Toledo, OH
Notice how simply adding bullet notes can immediately improve the readability of the text.
Thoroughly explain job responsibilities
In this resume sample, the applicant has briefly listed job details without providing much of an in-depth overview. Keep in mind that the previous/current work experience section is one of the most important on your resume. The employer will want to understand exactly what was gained from each job experience you have had. Therefore, simply starting My responsibilities were only offers a surface understanding. If you want your resume to stand apart from others, remember that it is not so much where you have worked, but rather the concrete skills and application gained form each position.
Proofread your work
Finally, but perhaps most importantly, you will want to proofread everything you have written before it is submitted. This means simply re-reading the text for any comma misusage, spelling errors, or grammar mistakes. The employer may not consider your application seriously if the typos are too distracting. Notice in example used above how comma and capitalization mistakes were edited. A resume that has been proofread shows that you have put both thought and consideration into your work.
