When it comes to your employment, you cannot allow for any advantage to go unexplored, particularly with something as pivotal as your resume. Perhaps some of the most useful things available to give you an edge are sample resumes and the way in which analyzing their strengths and weaknesses can make yours the best it can be. Weve started the process for you by consulting with experts to find errors and shortcomings in a real-life construction equipment operator resume sample so that you can avoid them.
Maintain neatness with bullet points
Without a doubt, the experience portion of your resume is the most important one, and therefore deserves to receive the most attention before being submitted. For all experience sections, particularly those with lengthy explanations of responsibilities of each job, it is imperative that the information is presented to your next potential employer using bullet points to maintain a high level of readability. This sample resume instead presents everything in one large block, making it difficult to discern whether two pieces of information are supposed to be related. WRONG: Led a crew of ten trade contractors Coordinated scheduling of trade contractors. Conducted meetings with site owners and trade contractors to schedule and complete punch list items. Accurately provided status information on project progress to the project management and owners. Created a company hot work program Monitored the safety of all construction activities, making on-site personnel safety the top priority. Coordinated training for the construction teams on site-specific requirements, techniques and procedures. Carefully coordinated plans and permits. Obtained notices of completion and compliance certifications from construction inspectors. RIGHT:
Follow your summary with skills
While you should have alluded to a few of your major skill sets in the summary at the top of your resume, those skills should be expanded upon in a dedicated section directly afterward. The writer of this sample resume elected to instead create a section titled Highlights, which, while this can be an effective device for listing some major career accomplishments and milestones, should be referred to as Skills in this instance. This way, when a hiring manager needs to get a quick sense of your qualifications, he or she is able to do so without having to sort highlights from capabilities.
Do not separate your experience
Another issue with this sample resume is the writers decision to make two separate sections for Relevant Experience and Professional Experience, creating the potential for misunderstanding with any eventual readers. What this separation subtly implies is that the items described in the Professional section may not be relevant to the position for which the writer is applying. Since the Relevant section takes up such a small portion of the document, one might construe that the applicant has little experience in the field she is entering. It is best to combine all your experience into a single section so as to demonstrate a sense of progression to potential employers.
