A Summary section should be in paragraph form, should be four to six lines, and should address an overview of your experience, two or three major skill sets, and some valuable personality traits/soft skills
Your summary is the one part of your resume that you should write in paragraph form. It should read like a short speech showcasing the candidates qualifications, with the personal pronouns removed. Following this rule will allow your summary to be filled up a little more while taking less space. WRONG: Summary
RIGHT: Summary Skilled construction laborer with 5 years of experience. Familiar with resource allocation and production methods. Thrives independently or as a team member. Proactive in creating a safe and productive environment. Physically fit and effective at completing difficult projects and tasks on schedule. Consistently follows through with all orders and instructions. Works well in a team setting. Experienced manager, professional with strong leadership and relationship-building skills.
Separate your information into appropriate categories
While it can be good to have a section highlighting accomplishments before you job experience, make sure it contains awards, special recognition, or other achievements. Operating a forklift and connecting hoses are not accomplishments. Operating a forklift without any safety incidents for 5+ years would fit better in this section. The sample resume has a lot of good information in the Accomplishments section that can be kept on the resume by simply being relocated to the earlier Highlights section. It is even better to divide this into Skills and Personal Highlights, to avoid clutter and help the items on the lists stand out.
All lists should be in bullet point format
Bullet format is more organized and make it easier for a reader to refer back to individual points throughout the resume. This format will make your lists appear longer while bringing more attention to each specific point. Make sure to start each point in your Experience section with a strong action verb and to end with a period. Be specific and avoid having points like: Performed general laborer duties. WRONG: Experience Welders Helper, 03/2013 ? 04/2013 NorthStar Biofuels ? Watsonville, CA Provided help and tools to welders, bolt up, forklift operation, hanging pipe in the racks, cleaning up the job site. As well as but not limited to all general laborer duties. RIGHT: Experience Welders Helper, 03/2013 ? 04/2013 NorthStar Biofuels ? Watsonville, CA
