Don’t sell yourself short by not having the resume that demonstrates you as the perfect candidate for the job. This clothing boutique store manager resume sample illuminates some of the common mistakes resumes make which could negatively affect how an employer views them. Resumes are the perfect way to communicate to employers how well you would fit the job, and having the right resume for your needs can make a world of a difference in obtaining it.
Your summary is your elevator pitch
Since your summary is the first section that a potential employer sees, it needs to be one of the strongest pieces of your resume. Summaries should be thought of as a 30-second elevator speech, and should only be around 4-6 lines long. Summaries that overextend their welcome are often ignored or cut short by someone looking to see a brief summary of a candidate. WRONG: Summary I’m a store manager who is highly energetic, outgoing and detail-oriented. I handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously while providing exceptional customer service.I’m a reliable and friendly store manager who quickly learns and masters new concepts and skills.I’m passionate about helping customers and creating a satisfying shopping experience.I’m upbeat and flexible with 11years experience in retail sales.I’m driven and results-focused professional.I’m reliable and a punctual Sales manager versed in merchandising, display design and customer relations.I possess an excellent work ethic. Areas of expertise include inventory, cash management and exceptional customer service.I’m a service-focused professional and friendly team player with a knack for building productive working relationships.I’m a high-achieving store manager offering an extensive background in customer service, sales, client relations and merchandising.I’m a self-directed and self-motivated team player who also works well independently.I have a firm commitment to customer service that has been described as second-to-none by employers. RIGHT: Summary Experience as a store manager with multiple simultaneous responsibilities including exceptional customer service. Well-versed in merchandising, display design, customer relations, inventory, and cash management. Extensive background with managing sales with energy, detail-orientation, and an outgoing and friendly style. Self-motivation and self-direction fuel my independent work while I am also a team player. It should be expected that employers have many resumes to read through before they find the right person to interview, so sections with appropriate brevity help respect that lack of time and help direct eyes to the most relevant information.
Don’t include your high school education
Resumes that should include high school education should only be used by young students who have only graduated recently and who have very little experience to show on their resume. For those with higher education, that university or institute should be what is highlighted. WRONG: High School Diploma: Criminal Justice Manchester Community College ? Manchester, CT, US RIGHT: Manchester Community College ? Manchester, CT, US The list of education was also not in chronological order. If you do have more than one university or institute to list, make sure that you are putting your most recent attendance first and older experiences last.
On that note, make sure you expound upon your higher education experience
Resumes need to be especially careful about how they are conveying themselves through their choice of vocabulary and their correct or incorrect use of grammar. When you are listing various skill sets or abilities, make sure they are all properly written WRONG: Manchester Community College ? Manchester, CT, US I went back to school after having my first daughter. While attending college my husband and I had our second child. I never went back to complete my degree. RIGHT: Manchester Community College ? Manchester, CT, US
Accomplishments should be extensive, or not included
If you don’t have at least three bullet points of impressive and relevant accomplishments to list, it is better to include them with work experience. Having an entire section for accomplishments but not really having any appropriate accomplishments to talk about makes your resume look more unfinished and unprofessional. Make sure that whenever a new section is created it has enough remarkable information to make it worthwhile.
