A prospective employers first impression of you will be what they see on your resume. Weve had experts evaluate a Clinical Nurse with Doula Experience resume sample to determine common mistakes and explain how to avoid them. If your resume is similar to this one, the following points will greatly improve it and give hiring managers incentive to call you for an interview.
Include relevant professional titles
If you have professional credentials relevant to the job youre applying for, include them after your name. In this example, the nurse applying for this position should include RN after her name.
Make sure your summary is sufficiently detailed and does not include an objective
While you want your professional summary to be succinct, you also want it to include enough detail to provide a comprehensive overview of your experience. This is the first thing the prospective employers read about you, so it should be enticing enough that they want to learn more about you. This section should be 4-6 lines and should include an overview of your experience, two or three major skill sets, and some personality traits or soft skills relevant to the position. It should always be in paragraph format. Also, it is not necessary to include an objective, either as a standalone statement or as part of the summary. The reader knows the purpose of your resume. Use this section only to pitch your skills and experience.
Put sections in the correct order or remove entirely
The Licenses section, if it is necessary at all, should be placed near the bottom, after Professional Experience and Education. Alternatively, this section could be removed entirely if you have less than three bullet points to place in it. In this example, licenses and certifications should go in the Education section.
Use bulleted lists in the Experience section and include sufficient detail
The Experience section should be in bulleted list format, with a minimum of 3 bullet points given for each position. Include a mix of duties, responsibilities, achievements, contributions, and accomplishments. Start each bullet point with an action word; do not use responsible for. Try not to repeat words. In the example resume, there are no bulleted lists in the Experience section, and there is not enough detail in the job descriptions.
Emphasize relevant job experience
Be sure to emphasize your expertise as much as possible. In the example, doula experience is not given until the last job entry, yet it is obvious the applicant is doing some form of doula work in her current position. Heres how you could make your doula experience stand out, including the use of bulleted lists to showcase the relevant information.
