You might really shine during a job interview, but the only way you are going to get an interview in the first place is if you have an exceptional resume that catches the employers attention. There are many rules to learn regarding proper resume writing, and our experts know precisely what hiring managers want to see. Make sure everything is organized correctly
There is a certain structure employers expect to see on resumes. Although you can deviate a little bit and certain sections are optional, you want to do your best to make sure everything is formatted properly. Never include references on a resume
A lot of employers will want to speak to your references to get a better sense of who you are as an employee. However, this information should not be given on a resume. The focus of your resume should be on what experiences you have earned and what you have accomplished at previous workplaces. Employers may ask for your references on a separate piece of paper, or they may not ask for them at all. Regardless, they should never be listed on a resume like this sample has done.
Have a minimum of five points for every job listed under Experience
You want to provide a detailed picture of what you have done at every job, so a potential employer knows what you are already skilled in. You do not want to exclude crucial information, and the typical recommendation is that job applicants should have at least five bullet points for every position they have held. This resume sample only has one sentence for two of her past jobs, and her most recent position working at Atomic Skis has absolutely nothing given. An employer is not going to be impressed that you simply worked at a place for a few years. You need to describe what exactly you did, so include as much information as you can.
Keep job descriptions relevant to what you did
We can see that she worked as a busser/host at FiftyFifty Brewing Co., but this is the only information given for that job:
It is great that the managers liked her, but she is not giving us any information regarding what exactly she did that made the managers like her in the first place. You want your work experience section to contain material relevant to what you did and accomplished at every place of employment. She is not telling us anything, and she needs to be a lot more specific in order to impress any hiring managers.
Have a location for every job
This is a small thing to add, but she should include where exactly Atomic Skis is located. We are given the name of the company, the title of her position and the dates she has worked there. However, you always want to include the location as well. This can help give an employer a sense of how far you are willing to travel to work for a company. A few extra items can really make your resume stand out to a prospective employer.
