Be sure to take note of these changes as they can help you in avoiding similar mistakes on your own resume. Before long, you will be eager to submit you resume and advance to the next part of the interview process.
Avoid religious or political statements
Although the applicant is seeking a position in childrens ministry, it is wise to stay clear of mentioning your personal religious values. The summary portion is your chance to showcase special talents and characteristics that would make you an excellent candidate for the job. Brief, concise statements work well. The applicant should try to avoid using first person, as it sounds less professional.
Pay attention to formatting
Formatting is crucial when it comes to building a solid resume. Be sure to use bullets when making lists, and keep consistent format throughout the page. The applicant has centered the overview section when in fact, doing so makes it more difficult to read. Note the difference in formatting and content: WRONG: Career Overview Friendly, personable, hard working individual with years of specialized customer service and training and who enjoys working with and meeting new people. In the future, I hope to significantly impact the United States for the restoration of the biblical moral values which have shaped this country until now, gladly going wherever the Lord leads on the way. RIGHT: Career Overview Friendly, personable, hard working individual with years of specialized customer service and training and who enjoys working with and meeting new people. Consolidating and making simple edits can drastically improve the readability of your resume.
Use Accomplishment section for awards and achievements
The Accomplishment section is the appropriate place to mention any noteworthy achievements or awards that you may have received. In this example, the applicant has included information that could be relevant to specific career experiences instead. Also as a general rule of thumb, it is not necessary to mention high school GPA unless the applicant is under 18.
Avoid generic words
Your resume should be concise and effective, and therefore you should avoid using generic and repetitive words whenever possible. Notice the difference in these two entries: WRONG: Work Experience Children’s Ministry Intern June 2013 to July 2013 Harvest Bible Chapel — Bettendorf, IA
RIGHT: Work Experience Children’s Ministry Intern June 2013 to July 2013 Harvest Bible Chapel — Bettendorf, IA
