A resume usually gives the very first impression of you to the company that you want to work for, but little mistakes, poor formatting, and various other issues can leave an employer wanting more. Checking over sample resumes is a great way to ensure your resume doesnt get looked over or tossed out. To help you find ways to make your resume better, weve asked our experts to examine this child development student resume sample and give us their feedback on what needs to change.
Write in present tense for ongoing occupations
If you are currently working, all of your job details need to be in present tense. Its easy to do, but make sure you dont accidentally write them in past tense like this applicant. They would need to go through and change all the verbs to present tense.
Include beginning dates for current job
Its not necessary to include Current for employment you still have, but it is necessary to put the start date. This way the potential employer knows how long this experience has helped you build skills. Ruth doesnt include the start date, so she would need to include month/year or just year.
Be specific about job duties
If job details are too general, it can sound like a job description instead of a rundown of duties you performed. Try to make them as specific to your own personal experience as you can. This applicant is very general when it comes to curriculum and what they taught. Because this is a major part of the job they want, they should expound on it and discuss what kind of programs were executed. If she has measurable success, this should be listed here, too.
List at least 5 points per Experience entry
The details part of the Experience section is a great way to showcase all of the relevant experience you could bring with you to a new job. Even if you dont have much experience, each job should have 5 to 8 points. Some of the jobs on this resume have less than that, so Ruth would need to come up with some strong details to add in order to fix this issue. WRONG: Intern Current Cleveland Elementary San Francisco, CA
RIGHT: Intern Current Cleveland Elementary San Francisco, CA
Dont list coursework for a finished degree
Relevancy is always key when it comes to a great resume. However, when it comes to education, its easy to become redundant. This applicant lists a Bachelor of Arts degree in Child and Adolescent Development. Below it, she lists the coursework she did during that program. Because all of that coursework is related to the degree, it is unnecessary to list it. She would need to delete it to fix this problem. WRONG: Bachelor of Arts: Child and Adolescent Development 2013 San Francisco State University San Francisco, CA Coursework in Childhood Development and Child Psychology Coursework in Special Education RIGHT: Bachelor of Arts: Child and Adolescent Development 2013 San Francisco State University San Francisco, CA
Use font at least 10-pt size
Font can be an issue if its too small, so its important to use at least 10-pt font. Ruth uses 8.5-pt font throughout her resume, which is much too small to easily and comfortably read. She would need to increase the font so the smallest is at least that big. Ready to apply this child development student feedback?
