If you are in the process of applying for a new job, you want to make sure your first impression is as strong as possible. Crafting an excellent resume that authentically represents your unique skills and talents is the best way of impressing a potential employer. In order to help you with this process, we have reviewed a sample Chemical Engineering Student resume and highlighted areas that are problematic or could be reworked. Be sure to pay attention to these areas and avoid making the same common mistakes in your own resume writing.
Avoid using pronouns
While pronouns may be appropriate for a cover letter or other sections of your application, they are to be avoided in your resume writing. Using pronouns, especially first person, can come across as too informal. Notice how in this sample resume, the applicant has used the first person in the summary section. The summary is an excellent opportunity to showcase your unique characteristics, and doing so can be done by using fragments and concise description. This example summary would also be strengthened without use of generic descriptions such as I am a really hard worker. This statement is rather empty and you want to make sure every description included in your resume offers new and vivid material.
Always use bullets for listing items
The readability of your resume is one of the most important factors. If a resume is difficult to navigate, you may lose the attention of your reader before he or she has gotten through the document. In order to ensure all the information is presented in an organized material, be sure to use bullet points. Notice the difference between these two forms: WRONG: Professional Experience 09/2011 – 01/2012 Petro ? Laramie, WY Cashier I did a lot working at this gas station, my main responsibility was standing behind the register but I also had to clean, tend to the food and a lot of angry customers and count money. 05/2011 – 08/2011 Albertsons ? Rock Springs, WY Cashier I had a wide range of responsibilities while working this job. I started out as a courtesy clerk who cleaned up spills and gathered carts but eventually worked my way up to cashier. 05/2010 – 08/2010 Dewar Drive-In ? Rock Springs, WY Waitress I was a waitress mostly but I did other odd jobs like cleaning and washing dishes. RIGHT: Professional Experience 09/2011 – 01/2012 Petro ? Laramie, WY Cashier
05/2011 – 08/2011 Albertsons ? Rock Springs, WY Cashier
05/2010 – 08/2010 Dewar Drive-In ? Rock Springs, WY Waitress
Notice how the readability is immensely improved in the second example.
The tone of your resume should sound formal and professional. Remember, you are speaking to a potential employer and not a peer or friend. In this sample Chemical Engineering Student resume, the applicant has used informal language, which is not an effective means of communicating her qualifications. Notice in the above example how we have edited out unnecessary phrases and wording.
