If you are in the process of applying for a new position, youll want your resume to be an accurate portrayal of your unique work experiences. Resumes are especially important considering they are your potential employers first impression of you. In order to help you out, we have reviewed a sample Certified Nurse Assistant resume and pointed out areas that are problematic. Be sure to take note of these changes so you can avoid making the same mistakes on your own resume.
Always use bullets for listing items
The readability of your resume is one of the most important factors. If employers are reading through several resumes, they will not have time to read through large blocks of texts and could ignore important information if it is not presented in a logical format. Bulleting helps separate items on your resume and displays them in a clear and memorable fashion. Notice the difference between these two formats: WRONG: Professional Experience Medical Assistant March 2008 to July 2008 Southwest Rheumatology — Glendale, AZ Read and recorded temperature, pulse and respiration.Massaged patients and applied preparations and treatments, such as liniment, alcohol rubs and heat-lamp stimulation.Prepared patient rooms prior to their arrival.Collected urine and fecal samples.Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.Directed patients in prescribed range of motion exercises and in the use of braces or artificial limbs.Performed routine tests such as urine dip stick, vision and hearing tests.Documented resident records on daily flow sheets.Provided patients and families with emotional support.Administered simple range of motion exercises.Maintained a clean, orderly and well-stocked environment.Participated in the maintenance of safe conditions within the facility and other related areas. RIGHT: Professional Experience Medical Assistant March 2008 to July 2008Southwest Rheumatology — Glendale, AZ
Notice how minor changes in formatting can make a significant difference on the clarity of the applicants information.
Use table formatting for Highlights section
As mentioned before, formatting is key. The skills section is a great place to list skills that are relevant and noteworthy to the job field. These skills should be understandable and specific, as they could set you apart from the other candidates applying for the same position. Note how the applicant has listed 13 different items here. A better format would be two columns with no more than 7 items per column. Otherwise, the section can overwhelm the rest of the resume.
Proofreading your work is as important as any other step in your resume writing. The applicant in this sample Certified Nurse Assistant resume has listed pertinent information; however, minor spelling and formatting mistakes detract significantly from the application. Meticulous proofreading can prevent you from making these mistakes. If you are interested in having your resume professionally reviewed, you should check out QuintCareer’s Resume Builder.
