If you are stuck about how to go about writing your professional resume, then there is a lot you can gain by listening to expert advice. That is why we had ours review a certified esthetician resume sample to find aspects that could be improved. Even if you are not interested in entering cosmetology, you can still benefit from these general guidelines concerning resume writing.
Make summary interesting and a paragraph in length
Your resumes summary should provide a concise overview of what you have to offer the organization. Chances are that all the applicants to the position have similar skillsets and experiences, so you want to set yourself apart and make the employer actively interested in reading the rest of your resume. You do not want your summary to be too long, but you should aim to have it around four sentences long. That should be enough to provide an ample amount of material without giving everything away.
Do not say you desire a new position
If we take a look at this sample resumes summary, then we find this statement: Desires a role in a day spa or medi-spa. You want to avoid talking about how you desire a job because it is simply redundant. The hiring manager is going to know that you are looking for a different job because there would be no reason for you to submit your resume otherwise. You never want to include superfluous information in your resume that does not add anything of substance, so you should just leave it out.
Do not write in past tense when discussing current positions
You want to ensure that everything you write on your resume is grammatically accurate, so it would not make any sense to talk about a job you currently work at in the past tense as can be seen with this resume sample:
The actual content of these points is excellent for the field she wants to go into, she would just want to rewrite them slightly, so they go like this:
Limit yourself to eight bullet points per job
It is always a good idea to be as specific as you can when discussing your work history, but you do not want to get carried away and have multiple pages of information. The general rule is to stick to a maximum of eight bullet points for every place of employment. On this sample resume, we can see that she has 10 bullet points given for her time as a makeup artist at Nordstrom. Correcting this is fairly simple, and you would either want to eliminate a couple of points that maybe are not as relevant as the others or find a way to combine a couple of the points. Every employer is going to be different, and they may ask in the job posting to see specific information within your resume. You can adjust accordingly, but it is always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the typical way to write a resume as seen with QuintCareer’s Resume Builder.
