It is quite common to get stressed out and nervous while writing a resume because there are seemingly so many tiny errors that can be made. Take a deep breath, and let our talented experts offer some advice on how to write a better resume. We had them review a caregiver resume sample, and there are plenty of general guidelines that can be learned from reading it.
Include a summary at the top of your resume
Most hiring managers are going to decide pretty quickly whether they are going to like or hate your resume, so you want to start out strong and include a summary at the beginning of the page. This summary should consist of a few sentences that concisely talk about your skillset and any additional pieces of information that could be interesting. This sample resume begins with her licenses and that she is certified in CPR and first aid, which is great, but any licenses or certifications you have should go toward the bottom of your resume. They should not be the first thing you lead with.
Work experience should only include contributions and responsibilities
Once we get down into her work experience, we see the following sentence listed under her job: I work for Touch of Grace Services, located at 139 East Fifth street in Natchitoches, LA. I am labeled a caregiver. This information is completely superfluous because the company she works for is given above the description as well as what her position is formally called. Once you state a position, you want to focus on what exactly you did there, so a hiring manager knows what tasks you are familiar with.
Work experience should include bulleted lists
This sample resume has her experience listed in paragraph form, which is incorrect. You should use bullet points to separate all of the various duties you had, so we would want to reformat the information to be like this:
This will make it easier on the prospective employer to read through your job description, and you should remember to include as many specific details as possible.
Eliminate high school experience
The writer of this resume sample has included the fact that she earned her high school diploma, and she has added a bunch of stuff that she did while in high school. However, the fact that she is currently working toward her college degree means that we can assume she got her diploma at some point. It is unnecessary information to include because it does not really tell us where she is professionally at this moment. She would want to give greater emphasis to her current job and any relevant coursework she is taking in college.
Community service can be included with work history
Although you can give any community service experience its own unique section, it can be acceptable to simply say you were a volunteer within your work experience. Since this sample resume only has one job listed under work history, it would be beneficial for her to move information from the community service section up more and provide more details about what she did. For example, she can say that she was a volunteer at a VA hospital underneath professional experience and then add a bulleted list about all the various responsibilities she had, which would be great in making herself stand out more in the prospective employers mind. This sample resume was clearly written by someone who is just starting out in the workforce, but that does not mean it has to be sparse.
