Lengthen and Strengthen Summary
This section is meant to be a selling pitch to a potential employer, and ideally it should be four to six lines. Include two to three major skill sets, your experience overview, and some personality traits. It should be in paragraph form, although sentence fragments are okay to use. Current Summary: I have always had a passion for helping children with special needs, being raised with a sister that has cerebral palsy. I have worked with children with autism, cerebral palsy and learning disabilities. Improved Summary: Passionate about working with and helping children with special needs. Have five years of experience working professionally with children with autism, cerebral palsy, and learning disabilities. Years of experience working with sister who has cerebral palsy. Dependable and responsible in both professional and personal environments. Motivated to develop my skills in a challenging career.
Use Bulleted Lists in Work Experience Section
When listing highlights of your past or current work experiences, you should use bullet points. Five to eight points are ideal, and each should start with a strong action word. WRONG: Habilitation, respite and attendant care for children with special needs. Worked at the adult day program for 6 months. Practice with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy, teaching children appropriate positive behavior skills that allow individuals to be more successful and managing the consequences of behavior. Experience with “The Incredible Flexible You” which is a Social thinking program for Preschool and Early Elementary Years. My 22 year old sister has Cerebral Palsy and I have worked with her for most of my life and continue to work with her. RIGHT:
While mentioning that her sister has cerebral palsy is fine, it is better in the summary section and should be left out of her current positions experiences. When writing out bullet points for the other two positions, focus should be on tasks and experience that would possibly be relevant to the job she is looking for. For example, instead of pointing out that she has experience in food handling, she should focus on the customer service aspects and how she gained leadership skills and increased responsibilities.
Improve Education Section
Unless high school is the only education you have received and you graduated recently, you do not need to include it in this section. If you have gone to college it is assumed that you have received your high school diploma. She should have expanded on the education that she received at the community college including the area of study, and any relevant campus organizations, internships, and/or coursework. It is easy to apply what you learned in this care provider for children with special needs resume sample to your own job application.
