When you are writing a resume, make sure you authentically showcase your unique skills and qualifications. To help you out with this process, we have reviewed a camp counselor resume sample and pointed out areas for improvement. Pay close attention to these changes, and avoid making the same common mistakes in your own resume writing.
One of the most common mistakes applicants can make is overlooking the potential of the summary section. The summary is your opportunity to make somewhat of a sales pitch to the employer about your professional talents and experiences. The summary should be able to hook the readers attention and motivate him or her to continue reading the rest of your resume. In this resume sample, the applicant has used the proper format of fragments written in paragraph form: Friendly and energetic. Education professional driven. Looking to work in an environment that helps students stay motivated to learn, at all stages of the learning process. There are changes that could be made to increase the effectiveness of this opening statement. The section itself could be extended to 6 lines rather than 2, with each line using more descriptive language. Also, simply listing adjectives is not recommended. These fragments should be thought of as full sentences without pronouns.
Avoid repetitive language
Because your resume should be short in nature, it is important to make sure each word or phrase offers new information about who you are as a professional. Keep in mind that the employer reading your application will have several others to read through. Notice the repetition in the following entries: Box office cashier January 2007 to August 2009Marcus Theaters ? Elk River, MN
Human Service Technician October 2010 to May 2012Divine House INC. ? Morris, MN
The applicant has repeated the phrase responsible for, which can make the writing sound generic. This may seem like a minor error, but you could risk losing the attention of your reader if your writing is repetitive and not memorable.
Offer enough description
Although you want to keep your content concise, you also want to make sure you have provided sufficient information about your previous work experience. This section is vital to your resume because it offers a history of your previous or current responsibilities. Therefore you do not want to sell yourself short by listing only a couple of items under each previous position. Remember that each job can have up to eight items of descriptive information.
Proofread your work
Perhaps one of the most vital steps in resume writing is proofreading your work. This means combing through, line by line, to ensure that there are no spelling or grammar mistakes. Also. be sure that the spacing and formatting has been properly implemented. In this sample resume, the applicant has made a few of these minor errors that can be easily corrected. Doing so would ensure that even the pickiest of employers would not be distracted. If you are ready to move forward in the process of writing your resume, dont hesitate to get professional help.
