There are numerous mistakes that can be made on a professional work resume, and unfortunately, too many of those little mistakes can add up and jeopardize your chances of getting a new great job. It is best to familiarize yourself with how resumes should be formatted and written, and we asked our experts to help you out. Do not use third person pronouns
Although we have all been taught our entire lives to write in complete sentences, your resume is one place where you can skirt around this rule. There is no reason to start sentences with I, and this sample resume has a few instances of this in the summary. For instance, we can see the following sentence in this resume sample: I am very knowledgeable on safety rules and safety caution. In the interest of conserving as much space as possible, you could simply shorten this statement to be like this: Knowledgeable on safety rules and safety caution.
Have a maximum of eight bullet points per column under skills
Having a skills section on your resume is a great opportunity to fill the page with keywords a hiring manager is going to be on the hunt for. However, you do not want to get too out of hand and fill this portion with an abundance of keywords. Each of the columns in this section contains 11 bullet points, which is far too many. Generally, you want to have no more than eight in each column, so you should really focus on the keywords that are going to be most prevalent at this new job.
Leave out references phone numbers
Some hiring managers will want to speak with your former employers before hiring you, and others will not care that much. Unless you are specifically requested to include references on your resume, the default should always be to leave them out. Many employers will ask you for a list of references during the actual interview, so focus on your own achievements on your resume and leave out the phone numbers for now.
Use bullet points and be as specific as you can be in the experience section
You never just want to have a paragraph when you are talking about the responsibilities you had at a certain job. You should be utilizing bulleted lists to format everything correctly, which would mean the list of responsibilities for his job at Reynolds Contracting should go like this:
However, simply formatting the information on the sample resume like this is not enough. This list is pretty bland, and you want to be as descriptive as possible when discussing your former employment. One way to make this list more interesting would be to write it as such:
With education, start with whatever is most recent and work backwards from there
This rule should be applied to work experience as well, but you always want to start with the thing that is most recent and then go backwards in time. This resume sample has his high school diploma listed first, and then he puts that he got a college degree. First, he would want to add the date he received his college degree, and he would want to put that first because it is more remarkable.
