Formatting and White Space
When writing a resume, you have to make sure that the format is perfect. There is a lot of competition out there, and you don’t want to lose a position because your resume was messy and distracting. For example, in this resume, the formatting under the professional experience is a bit off. The first piece of professional experience has a large amount of white space under it. The second piece of the professional experience has almost no white space under it. The uneven white space gives the resume an amateur look. It makes the employer have to look hard to see where the second one ends and the third one begins. When you write your resume, make sure that everything you write is evenly spaced. If you have two lines of white space between your first and second piece of professional experience, make sure there are two lines of white space between the second and third, too.
Contact Information and References
Another important point of a resume is having a proper amount of references listed. When you’re being hired for a professional career, the employer is going to want to call your previous employers to hear what their experience was like working for you. Listing the name of the employers was a good first step. If the hiring employer wants to look up the numbers, he or she will be able to do that. However, if there is a stack of resumes with the phone number listed, they are more likely to call the other applicants and shove yours toward the bottom of the pile. Also, make sure that there is sufficient contact information to contact you, too. This sample resume has the applicant’s address, home number, cell number, and e-mail address. All of those are important for contact. This gives the employer more than one way to contact you.
List Licenses and Certifications
As an emergency department nurse, you might have licenses and certifications that highly your extensive ability to do your job. For example, you might be certified in basic life support, pediatric life support, and more. You need to make sure that these are listed on your resume. When another applicant has a list of licenses and certifications, it could give them the edge that they need to get the job over you.
When you are writing your professional summary, you want it to be like an objective statement. Don’t be afraid to put a little bit of personality in your resume and sell yourself. For example, in this sample, it starts by saying 11 years of… and goes on about the experience. It’s great to show how much experience you have when you write your summary. However, it doesn’t say much about you as a person. You can start with a personality flair. You can say something like, Highly energetic emergency department nurse with 11 years of experience. It allows the employer to picture you bustling around the emergency department and doing your job quickly and happily.
