General tips for a Summary section: Write four, five or six lines that touch on your experience, two or three major skill sets and key personality traits/soft skills. Write in narrative form, using sentence fragments in first person with the pronouns removed.
Put at least three bullet points in an awards/accomplishments section
This job applicant has won two customer service awards, so she created a standalone Achievements section. However, because best practices call for a minimum of three bullet points for such sections, she should find at least one other item to add. She should use quantifiable metrics; for example, with one job, she says that she displayed the ability to organize and produce strategically in order to increase sales within the department. She could put this in the Achievements section, using a figure increase in sales to make her point. Possible addition: Increased sales by X% for ABC Company. If you cant come up with at least three bullet points, include your awards/accomplishments with the relevant work experience.
Avoid using first person; this resume has lots of explicit first person (I) in the last section. Refrain from including your interests unless they are directly relevant to the job to which you are applying. In this case, creativity and baking are discussed, so the applicant could include that information only for cake decorator jobs. However, she can mention these interests and others on her LinkedIn profile.
The Education section of this resume is short but messy. Did the applicant get her GED at a community college, or did she go to college to get coursework? Its unclear. General practices to follow for the Education section are to write in progress or anticipated graduation 20XX if you are in a degree program. Do not include high school or GED data unless it is your only education. If you took some coursework but did not get a degree, write, Coursework in XX, Name of School. If youre involved in ongoing professional development, include these courses, trainings, and seminars. Like with work experience, start with the most current information and work backward chronologically. With some solid changes, this applicant could soar to the top of the pack.
