Use this auto service adviser resume sample to help you create your own resume. Your resume is one of the most important documents you will use to get called for an interview. By looking at the common mistakes made by others, you can avoid them and improve your chances of being hired.
Polish your summary
The summary is the first thing employers will read. For this reason, it is vital that you sell yourself immediately. Ensure that this section is as clean and organized as possible. The sample resume makes several mistakes, namely that it is too short, and it uses personal pronouns. It should be about four lines long and avoid using words such as I and we. This will set the professional tone that your resume should take as well as show the reader that you are a well rounded individual with many benefits to bring to the table.
Format your experience section
The experience section is at the core of your resume. This is the section that you want to make sure looks as professional and appealing as possible. Take a look at an example position from this sample resume: driver September 2010 to February 2012 Elite Towing and recovery – Ronkonkoma, NY driver of wrecker, flatbed and heavy Wrecker. knowledge of air bag systems, numerous tools. responded to police calls, road service calls and account calls as well as brought on new accounts on a regular basis There is little to no formatting, the information is disorganized and messy, and there are capitalization errors throughout. An experience section that looks like this is going to damage your chances. Here is an improved version: Driver 10/2010 to 02/2012 Elite Towing and Recovery Ronkonkoma, NY
To improve the content, the information was shifted into a bulleted list and action verbs were placed at the beginning of each point. You should normally have between five and eight points for each position.
Manage the length of the resume
It is important to realize that the length of your resume implies something about you. If there is wasted or blank space, as this resume has, it makes it look like you do not have as much to say about yourself or are artificially extending your resume. Take a look at the highlights section. Even though there is the correct amount of information, each bullet has a big gap after it. Despite this, the resume fails to fill and entire page. To fix this, the experience section should be formatted as seen above, the summary should be extended, and an optional section could be added. Optional sections can include Accomplishments, Awards, Affiliations, Certifications, or Licenses. It can also be effective to mention any volunteer or internship work you have done.
Always be professional
If you leave any inconsistencies or typographical errors in your resume, it keeps you from appearing professional. Notice the nearly complete lack of capitalization in the experience and highlights sections, and the use of personal pronouns in the summary. In fact, the only section that adequately presents the writer as a professional is the accomplishments section.
